history & FAITH
Belief or faith, whatever you choose to call it, is a matter of personal choice. Me, I am more interested in the architecture and history of old churches and monasteries, than in their religious significance. Documenting history is what I am after.
MONASTERY OF PROBOTA – SUCEAVA ROMANIA
The present church, built between 1528 and 1530 by Petru Rares. It is the beautiful internal and external frescos, painted shortly after the construction of the church, that give the site its particular cultural and artistic significance.
THE FOUR FINGERS – CHURCH OF RAFTIVANI
Called the “Four Finger Church”, this place of worship was built at the request of the boyar Lupu Răftivanu, after he survived a war. The boyar raised his hand and showed the craftsmen how he wanted the church to be, and they built the building exactly according to the shape of his hand.
CHRISTS OF BESSARABIA
These wood carvings all show Christ in various ways, and are the work of local wood carvers, in many cases anonymous. They are good examples of naïve rural art, and one can notice the “fashion” of carving the wood in various manners and shapes, according to the respective period; the details around him are varying too.
MONASTERY OF BARSANA – ROMANIA
Barsana Monastery is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Maramures. But although it receives a lot of visitors daily, few know the true history of the place. There are 2 settlements in Barsana: the monastery and the wooden church, a UNESCO heritage site.
EASTER VIGIL IN BESSARABIA
For the Easter night vigil, people are gathering in the wee hours of the morning, around 03.00 hrs, in the local churchyard, and they bring with them members of the family, together with small quantities of food, cooked especially for the Easter.
BUKOVINA MEDIEVAL CHURCH FRESCOES
The 15th and 16th century old Moldavian churches have their external walls covered in authentic and unique fresco paintings, representing complete cycles of religious themes. The frescoes do preserve a lot of their original colours and details, although in places the paintings are somewhat faded.
