briefly on this author
Passionate amateur film photographer, author, traveller and an avid observant of life, this beautiful, hard at times journey, with its upsy/downsy, wobbly ride.

My name is Julian Tanase, a film photographer from Romania; mind, I am not a professional photographer. This is my way of expressing my experiences and thoughts on what and how I see, on what I choose to photograph, on how I do that, and why. My (rather unconventional) feelings and approach to art photography are yet to be clear, at least for me. I am on a continuous journey, not yet certain of the destination, but enjoying every mile of the way.
"recording life on celluloid can be a singular experience"
My primary inclination is towards documentary/social photography and photo journalism. Largely in-between, I am seriously making efforts to grasp the idea of art and conceptual photography; I do believe these two to be extremelly close related. Unconventional angles, only available light, rough shadows and piercing highlights, mundane scenes showed as something unique, though they are not exactly that. I am of a free spirit and quite independent (fiercely so), and as such, not encumbered by any schools or trains of thought.
"The nitty-gritty of the mundane is my well of inspiration"
In my projects, I am trying to mix the photographic techniques with the meaning. I do collaborate with various artists in creating visual impressions of some artistic events, if the themes are interesting and challenging enough, and if the visual language and final message is something that I can understand and speak.
I am a member of the Romanian Association of Photography Artists and of the International Association of Art Photographers (V-IAAP). Currently, I am trying to better understand art and photography as student of New York Institute of Photography. I am also articipating in various international photographic alons, contests and exhibitions, mainly under the patronage of FIAP and IAAP.
I also make efforts in supporting other film photographers and emerging artists by sharing my knowledge and experiences, by writing articles (Ilford Magazine, Visual Poetry, 35MMC and others), related to analogue photography, cameras and film.
My credo? I am interested in trying to make people see, rather than just look. If I succeed in doing so with but one photograph from the hundreds I shoot, I consider myself fortunate.
